Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch August 31, 1909
C. W. Kellinger, one of Norfolk's best citizens, died very suddenly last night 
at his home, No. 153 Duke street, in the 70th year of his age, having been 
stricken with paralysis about 9 p.m., while in the bathroom. Upon his condition 
being discovered, Dr. L. T. Royster was called and attended him, but the 
physician's efforts were unavailing and he passed away at 12:35 o'clock without 
having regained consciousness. He had been in good health, and his death comes 
as a severe shock to his relatives and friends.
The deceased was very prominent in municipal affairs in Norfolk during the 
reform administration, at which time he held the office of chairman of the 
Street, Sewer and Drain Board. He took great interest in civic affairs and was 
ever ready to lend his aid to any movement for the advancement of the interests 
of the people of Norfolk. He was widely known in this section, and no one was 
more highly esteemed. He was a Confederate veteran, having served as a staff 
officer throughout the war, except when a prisoner. For many years he was 
closely identified with the mercantile interests of the community and, till a 
few years ago, was in the brokerage business with his son. He was an active 
churchman and for years was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist 
congregation. He is survived by his wife and son, Frank. W. Kellinger.
The funeral occurs at 11 a.m. tomorrow from the residence, Rev. Dr. S. W. 
Melton, officiating. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
