                          THOMAS KELLY KILLED.
Thomas Kelly, a white man about 35 years of age, was standing on the upper deck, 
near the foremast, with his right hand resting against the rigging. Near him 
were two little white boys, sons of the mate. They were watching the zigzag 
lightning over the blue waters of the Chesapeake. The display was violent and 
beautiful.
While they were admiring the storm in the distance, there was a peal overhead, 
the topmast was splintered into a thousand pieces and fell upon the vessel. 
Kelly staggered from the rigging and sunk upon the deck unconscious. The boys 
were shocked. Captain Simmons rushed from the pilothouse to the side of the 
prostrate seaman, who still breathed.
The engines were reversed and the vessel headed for Norfolk, with the hope that 
medical attention might save the life of the injured man, but he expired before 
reaching the city. About 10 o'clock last night, Coroners Newton and Charters 
held an inquest and rendered a verdict in accordance with the facts stated.
Kelly was a native of Nova Scotia. He left home when a boy and said that he had 
no relatives and was unmarried. He will be buried here in
the lot of the Seaman's Friends' Society. He was a member of a benevolent 
society formed by the employees of the Clyde Line which provides for the sick 
and buries the dead.
The body was prepared for interment by Mr. Oliver. The Benefactor left for 
Philadelphia about 11 o'clock last night.
