Lane Kelly, a widely known and prominent resident of Norfolk, died last night at 10:30 o'clock at his residence in the Albemarle Court apartments. He had been in failing health for some time and so his death last night was not entirely unexpected. All of his immediate family were with him except one son, Monroe Kelly, a naval officer, who is with the Atlantic fleet at Guantanamo. For years Mr. Kelly was prominent in both the social and business life of the city. Born in Albemarle county, he moved shortly afterwards to Fredericksburg, Va., where he lived until he was 21 years old. In 1871, he came to Norfolk and at once engaged in the wholesale business, which he followed throughout the rest of his business career. He retired from active work six years ago on account of impaired health. He first entered the firm of Goodrich & Company, afterwards going to Allen & Borum. Soon afterwards he formed partnership with Mr. Borum and was the head of the firm of Kelly & Borum, wholesale grocers, for many years, retiring in 1911. A man of strong, pleasing personality, he made many friends in the city of his adoption and was generally well-known throughout this section. He was a member of Christ Episcopal church. Besides his wife, who was Miss Alice Reed (sic), daughter of the late George C. Reed (sic), he is survived by five children, Mrs. Walter H. Taylor, Miss Bessie Kelly, George C. R. Kelly, W. Lane Kelly, Jr., and Monroe Kelly, U.S.N.; also by two sisters, Mrs. A. Jackson Smith and Miss Elizabeth Kelly of Fredericksburg, Va. The funeral will take place at Christ church Friday at an hour to be announced later. FUNERAL OF MR. KELLY The funeral of W. Lane Kelly will take place at Christ Episcopal church today at 12:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Elmwood.
