A native of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Grigsby Whitehead and Irene Burwell Whitehead. She was predeceased by her three siblings, Irene W. Marshall, Dr. Hugh G. Whitehead Jr., and Margaret Walke Whitehead Lee. Elizabeth (Betsey) was a graduate of Maury High School, attended Farmville State Teachers College, and made her debut at the Norfolk German Club. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. She was active with their Meals on Wheels Program and Shepherd's Corner. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Blair Kelsey Bickford and her husband James VanAllen Bickford of Norfolk; her son, Sidney Harrison Kelsey Jr. and his wife Carolyn Annas Kelsey of Virginia Beach; and six grandchildren, James VanAllen Bickford IV of San Diego, Christopher West Bickford of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Nathan Taylor Bickford of Orlando Fla., David Blair Bickford of Norfolk, Anne Calvert Kelsey and Sidney Harrison Kelsey III, both of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her three nephews, Richard M. Marshall III and his wife Betty, Hugh Burwell Marshall, and William Thomas Waff and his wife Betty Jean Spurhan Waff. The family wishes to thank Senior Corps of Norfolk, especially Shawna Brown and Claudia Lawson, Lynn Klinger, RN, Sandy Turner, and Odyssey Hospice, namely Bonnie Kozak and Michelle Bradford Also recognized are Lenora Silva, (Shad) Ro Thompson, Rosemary Jackson and Gordon Profitt all for their care, compassion and loving assistance. Special attentive friends include cousin Joan Whitehead Taylor, Hank Pugh, Dot Marshall, Jean Bryan and Martha Sarcone. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk. A reception will follow at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Burial will be private. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, WHRO or the Norfolk SPCA.
