Virginian-Pilot  October 9, 1900
Mr. Thomas Kiernan, father of Messrs. James V. and Thomas Kiernan, departed this 
life at St. Vincent’s Hospital Sunday morning from the effects of a surgical 
operation performed some time ago. The deceased was born in Ireland, but had 
resided in Norfolk for twenty-five years. He was 70 years of age. The funeral was 
held from St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon and was 
conducted by Rev. Father O’Hara, assistant pastor. There was a fine display of 
floral tributes. The interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Following were the 
pallbearers: P. Tierney, Jas. O’Rourke, J. F. Lawler, M. A. McKevitt, J. R. 
Coleman, S. C. Phillip, F. W. McCourt, F. F. Tholl.
