Thomas F. Kiernan, of 328 Olney road, aged 61, died yesterday at a local 
hospital as the result of a traffic accident last Monday in which he sustained a 
fractured skull. His death, while not directly traceable to the accident, would 
not necessarily have occurred if it had not been for the accident, Dr. Charles 
H. Lupton said last night. He was unconscious for some time and this resulted in 
lung congestion which caused death.
 The accident occurred on Olney road, between Mowbray arch and Botetourt street. 
Mr. Kiernan being struck by an automobile as he was attempting to cross the 
street. Robert Allen, 23, of 222 East Bute street, who was driving the car, 
surrendered to the police yesterday when he was told of the death of Mr. 
Kiernan. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter. The accident was 
unavoidable, according to Detective Adams, who investigated the case.
Mr. Kiernan was a native of Staten Island, N.Y., but had been a resident of 
Norfolk for 46 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Hatton Kiernan, 
and several nieces and nephews. The body will be taken from H. D. Oliver’s 
funeral apartments, 610-12 East Freemason street, to Sacred Heart Catholic 
Church for services Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Interment will be in St. 
Mary’s Cemetery.
