Kinch, a white boy, 16 years old, lies at St. Vincent's Hospital, probably fatally shot in the abdomen by Mr. G. M. Veale, his employer. The unfortunate affair seems to have been entirely unintentional and the result of a mistake. The boy, whose home is on High Street, in this city, clerked for Mr. Veale at the old Town Crossing, about half way between Norfolk and Ocean View, and slept at the store. Saturday night he left the store, not notifying Mr. Veale of his absence. Between 2 and 3 o'clock Sunday morning he returned, and entering the store, slammed the door behind him. Mr. Veale, hearing the noise, suspected at once that someone was trying to rob him of the large amount of money he had in the store, and went to the building to find out what was wrong. Entering he heard a noise and fired in the direction from which it came, at the supposed burglar. It proved to be his clerk. Young Kinch fell, shot through the abdomen, the ball passing entirely through his body. He was brought to St. Vincent's Hospital Sunday morning and there Dr. Ruffin, assisted by Drs. McCormick, Riddick, Newbill, Anderson and Moncure, performed the operation of laparotomy. It was also found necessary to remove the kidney. The young man is in a very critical condition and the chances for his recovery are slight. No arrests have been made. John E. Kinch, the youth who was the victim of the unfortunate affair in the county Saturday night, being shot by mistake by Mr. G. M. Veale, died at St. Vincent's Hospital at 3 o'clock yesterday morning from his injury, aged sixteen years. An inquest was held and a verdict of accidental death rendered, The deceased was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Kinch and the late William Kinch. The funeral will take place from his mother's residence No. 63 High Street in this city this morning at 11 o'clock.
