KING IS DEAD; FORMER CITY SERGEANT HERE Bernard J. King, 53, widely known Norfolk business man and former City Sergeant, died in a local hospital Sunday at 2:05 p.m. after a long illness. He was associated with Clinton J. Curtis in the operation of the firm of Creekmore the Cleaner, Inc. He had been connected with the business since 1941 after having served as Chief Deputy City Sergeant under Lee Lawler, incumbent, for a brief time. Prior to his service with Lawler, he was chief deputy to Charles Francis, City Sergeant, and was himself the holder of that office after Francis' death. Later he was defeated for the office by Lawler in an election. King was appointed Acting City Sergeant by Judge R.B. Spindle. After leaving his post with Lawler he entered the cleaning and pressing business. A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mrs. Bridget King. He was prominent in the affairs of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B.P.O. Elks, serving as secretary and then as exalted ruler of that lodge. He was in the Navy during World War I. He was a member of the American Legion. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he was active in Norfolk Council No. 357, Knights of Columbus. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary King Walsh, of Norfolk and two brothers, Edward James King and Thomas Patrick King, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. The body will be taken from the residence, 740 East 27th Street, to St. Mary's Catholic Church for funeral services tomorrow at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. King, former city sergeant and prominent in Norfolk business and fraternal life, who died Sunday, were conducted yesterday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by the Rev. Richard Rivard. Present in the sanctuary were the Rev. Edward W. Johnston, the Rev. M. J. Harrison, the Rev. John J. Meehan, the Rev. B. J. McKenna, the Rev. Lloyd D. Brown and the Rev. Joseph A. McAndrews. Pallbearers were W. H. Lauder, Clinton J. Curtis, Frank J. Spicuzza, J. B. Lascara, W. M. Walsh, Judge J. Hume Taylor, C. E. Wright and M. R. Broudy. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
