She was the daughter of W. Judson and Lillian Shepherd King. A native of Norfolk, she lived much of her life in Tidewater, Virginia. Her primary interests were always of the greater world and how she could make it better. She attended schools in Tidewater and went on to receive degrees from the Norfolk Division of William and Mary (ODU), the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, William and Mary College, and a PhD from the University of Maryland in College Park. She worked with Virginia Beach Public Schools as a teacher, elementary school principal, supervisor and briefly taught for the Department of Defense overseas. She eventually directed reading programs in Virginia Beach and later in Hampton City Public Schools. A longtime member of Christ & St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, her spiritual life was an integral part of her and she worked with fellow church members in two ministry areas primarily. One was to develop a tutoring program at the Mission of the Holy Spirit which helped underserved children in their academic journey. She later became the President of the Board of the Mission. In addition, she served on the Caring for Creation Committee, working to save nature on our planet. She was faithful in worship and in Bible Study as a part of a group that met regularly. She travelled all over the world, at times researching issues relating to children’s literacy and eventually wrote a child’s “Beginning to Read Book” which was translated into five foreign languages. In retirement she became very interested in ecology and the preservation of our planet. She read extensively and collected unique bits of information to share with a limited readership with the hope that these bits of information would help readers see the need for greater care of our planet. She also enjoyed attending lectures and taking university courses. In her spare time and throughout her life, she loved being on the water; sailing, traveling and learning and at one time was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She is survived by cousins Ann Vandersyde, husband Frank and children of Virginia Beach; John N. Vandersyde, wife Ann Danylew and children of Richmond, Virginia; David Reynolds, wife Anne and children of Austin, Texas; Constance Reynolds Somers, husband Richard and children of San Antonio, Texas; Peter Reynolds, wife Rebecca of Missouri, Robin Reynolds Willim, husband Drew and children of Bentonville, Arkansas. Memorial Gifts may be made to Christ & St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the World Hunger Organization, or Hampton Roads Community Foundation. A service celebrating her life will be held at Christ & St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in Norfolk, VA.
