King, Ph.D., D.D., of the 1300 block of Hanson Ave., passed away March 28, 2000, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Norfolk, ``Buddy,'' as he was affectionately called, was the son of the late Maria King and Paschal R. King, and brother to the late Russell L. King. He was the husband of Dr. Eleanor J. King, Ph.D., D.D., of Norfolk, a marriage ordained in heaven. Dr. King retired as a professor and minister after 36 years of faithful service and was the founding pastor of Johnson Memorial Temple in Norfolk. Dedicated to his family, the church and his community, Dr. King participated in many activities including: Sunday School Bible Class; superintendent, Sunday School; teacher, Prayer and Bible Study; co-sponsor for 10 years, Vacation Bible School; funded Johnson Memorial Temple Library; former deacon and trustee, Bethlehem Baptist Church; chaplain, Bruce's Park Civic League; president, Men's Auxiliary of Women for Political Action; past treasurer, Norfolk City Democratic Committee; former member, Bethlehem Baptist Church; organizer, Bruce's Park Civic League; co-sponsor, Bruce's Park Tutorial Program and teacher since 1975; co-sponsor, Friday Night Children's Theater; chaplain, New Light Lodge No. 196, Prince Hall of Virginia; musician, first chair trumpet in several outstanding local orchestras; author, ``Sermon Book for Busy Ministers,'' and ``The Art of Writing'' (designed to teach students how to write more effectively); administrator, Johnson Memorial Preparatory Academy; co-sponsor, Self-Esteem Session (year round) for community youths; and member and treasurer, Norfolk Committee for the Improvement of Education. He received his Ph.D. in English and higher education administration from New York University and was professor Emeritus at Norfolk State University. Dr. King was one of the first to petition the Norfolk School Board to build the new Booker T. Washington High School near its original site. He served as a political activist for the Norfolk City Democratic Party for more than 40 years and also served as Precinct Committeeman for many years in the Jacox and Bruce's Park areas. Dr. King worked with ministers and probation offices in finding housing, giving personal guidance and encouraging parolees to straighten out their lives by turning to God. He also served on the Steering Committee for Vice Mayor Collins for City Council and other offices held. In addition to his wife, Dr. Eleanor J. King, Dr. Paschal King is survived by three daughters, the Rev. Dr. Eleanor King-Clark and Attorney Paschalle M. King III, both of Norfolk, and Dollie A. Sparrow of Chesapeake; a sister, Claristine Darden; grandchildren, Ronnie Sparrow Jr., Donnell Sparrow, Kristina A. Sparrow, Brandon Black, Paschelle King and Paschal King; great-grandchildren, Kiena Sparrow, Donnell Sparrow and Shannon Sparrow; friends, niece, Frances White and Arcelious White of Chesapeake; nephew, John Atkins of Norfolk; cousin, Alvertis Butler of Washington, D.C.; nephew, Vernon Brown of New Jersey; cousin, Dr. Raymond Jackson of Silver Springs, Md.; cousin, Dr. Ray Martin and wife, Lillian, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 11 .m. Tuesday at Christ Pentecostal Church, Norfolk, by Dr. Rufus Jackson. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
