He was 74. The cause was colon cancer. Mr. Kleinfelder, a native and longtime resident of Norfolk, attended Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary from 1937 to 1939. He was editor of the college newspaper, which received a national award for journalism excellence. In 1942 he graduated from the College of William and Mary and began his employment with Raymond Concrete Pile Company as an engineer. With the exception of a short period of time as a student at NROTC at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1945 he remained with Raymond Concrete as an engineer in heavy industry. In 1955 he founded his own engineering company which specialized in making test borings for skyscrapers and other large buildings throughout the Midwestern states. Among the jobs he performed were test borings for the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Rayburn Building for the House of Representatives in Washington, and innumerable structures for the Illinois Bell Company. In the early 1970s he turned to his first love, journalism, and became the managing editor of several industrial trade journals. He retired from such endeavors in 1978 and devoted his retirement years to managing private investments. He was a devout member of the Methodist faith. Mr. Kleinfelder is not survived by any close relatives. A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Monday 31 January at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel by Rev. Francis K. Collins. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit the funeral chapel between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to Park Place United Methodist Church.
