He was dean of Catholic clergy in the Valley of Virginia. In a critical condition for several days, he was brought here from Staunton for an operation. Father Klemmer was ordained as a priest June 14, 1924 - the same day that the Rev. E. W. Johnston, former pastor of Sacred Heart, with whom he was associated for a number of years, was ordained. His first charge was at St. Patrick’s Church, Richmond. He then went to Sacred Heart Church, South Richmond. Subsequently, he served parishes of the Sacred Heart, in Covington; Holy Angels, Cradock; and Sacred Heart in Norfolk. A native of Philadelphia, he was a son of Mrs. Mary Albert Klemmer and the late John Klemmer. During his seven years here, he was particularly active in the work of the Holy Name Societies of this area. He became moderator of the Tidewater section of the Holy Name, and was secretary of St. Mary’s Cemetery Association. He also was moderator of the Tidewater Catholic Information Center, and chaplain of the Catholic Daughters. A book composed of a number of his Catholic doctrine sermons while serving here was widely distributed. Besides his mother, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Frank Gaspann, of Linden, N. J.; Mrs. John Mayer, Mrs. Thomas Gordon, and Miss Anna Klemmer, all of Philadelphia; three brothers, the Rev. Raymond Klemmer, Albert Klemmer, and John Klemmer, also of Philadelphia. The body was removed to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments and will be taken to Sacred Heart Church today at 5 p. m. Rosary services will be held today at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The body will lie in state at the church until Requiem Mass tomorrow at 9 a.m. Afterwards, it will be forwarded to Staunton for another Requiem Mass Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Church, of which he was pastor.
