Norfolk Virginian January 3, 1884

           Captain J.D. Kline of Berkley, Killed by a Falling Block

On yesterday morning about 9 o'clock Captain J.D. Kline of Berkley, was struck 
on the head and instantly killed by a block which fell from the rigging of his 
schooner, the William Miller, laying off Brown's Shoals, just above Newport 
News. At the time of the accident Capt. Kline, aided by his two grown sons, was 
lending help toward righting a small capsized craft. The rough sea caused his 
own vessel to lurch suddenly, a pulley broke, and the block falling a distance 
of fifty feet, felled the unfortunate man to the deck, causing instant death. 
The remains were brought to Berkley in the schooner, arriving about 4 p.m. By 
direction of Dr. Wallace, coroner, Constable Berkley summoned an inquest jury, 
which after investigation, gave a verdict in accordance with the above facts. 
The deceased was about 60 years of age and was well esteemed by all that knew 
him. He was a Pennsylvanian by birth and moved to Berkley since the war. He 
owned the schooner William Miller and for some years past had been engaged in 
transporting heavy lumber from James River and other localities. He leaves a 
wife and six children to mourn his untimely end.

The funeral of the late Captain J.D. Kline of Berkley, whose unfortunate death 
by accident was chronicled in THE VIRGINIAN of yesterday, will take place today 
at 2:30 p.m. from the residence of the deceased, No. 86 Peal Street, Berkley. 
Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.
