Born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 15, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Mary Newberry and William Alexander Knight. After graduating from Maury High School, she received a B.S. from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now Madison University, and an M.A. from Duke University. A professional teacher for 38 years, she taught six years at Portlock High School, and at Old South Norfolk High School, and thirty-two years at Granby High School. For over sixty years, she taught adult Sunday school classes at Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, Elizabeth River Baptist Church, and Talbot Park Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Bethany Class. Active in many civic activities, she was a past worthy matron of Friendship Chapter 57, O.E.S., past president of Mary Calcott Women's Club, past president of Beta Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and past president of Joie de Vivre. She enjoyed giving book reviews for the Ghent Venture and presenting programs to Lydia Roper Home, garden clubs, and area churches. Predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Knight Starkey, and her brothers Ben Halsey Knight, William Newberry Knight, Harry Hallowed Knight, John Edward Knight, and her niece Billie Starkey Norman who affectionately claimed her as her adopted mother. She is survived by great nephew David Felton Norman, his wife Staci Marie Norman, and their children Calla Marie Norman, and Riley David Norman. She is also survived by her beloved nieces, nephews, and great nephews Alex Sandroni, Adam Sandroni, and Christian Sandroni. There are many esteemed friends and students as well. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, at 10:00 am on Thursday July 9 by Rev. Dr. Greg Dalle-Tezze. A reception will follow at Westminster where the family will greet those able to attend. Interment in Magnolia Cemetery will be private. Those who wish to make a memorial donation may make them to Freemason Baptist Church of Norfolk, or Granby High School Library of Norfolk.
