Oliver Funeral Apartments October 16, 2016 Montgomery Knight, Jr. (Monty), 83, passed away on October 13, 2016, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was the son of Emily M. Knight and Montgomery Knight, who was the first director of Aeronautics and Engineering at Georgia Tech. Monty was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and his family moved to Norfolk, Virginia upon his father's death when he was eleven, whereupon he attended JEB Stuart School and Granby High School for a short period before receiving a full four-year scholarship to Philips Exeter Academy. Sports were important to him. After briefly playing baseball for Granby, he played four years of varsity baseball and basketball for Exeter, becoming co-captain of Exeter's basketball team in his senior year. He was married to Jeraline Seelinger Knight for over 62 years. Some of their happiest years were when she was head cheerleader at the Norfolk Division of William and Mary, and Monty was on its basketball and baseball teams. Subsequently Monty received a basketball and baseball scholarship to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, where he became an All-Southern Conference third baseman. He graduated from William and Mary Law School, returning to Norfolk to practice law for over 60 years. He practiced with the law firms of Doumar, Pincus, Anderson and Knight; Knight, Dudley, Dezern and Clarke; Hofheimer Nusbaum P.C.; and finally Williams Mullen. He entered the United States Air Force as a Judge Advocate General, remaining in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a full Colonel and receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal. Monty served as president and board member of the following organizations: his law firms from time to time; the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association; the Norfolk Sports Club; the Chesapeake Athletic Club; the Tidewater Estate Planning Council; the Virginia Club and the Hampton Roads Tax Forum. He was also a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) for over 30 years, a member of the "Best Lawyers in America Trusts and Estates," and a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar Association and the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association. He was a member and served as Chairman of the Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission of Virginia. The highlight of his professional career was the receipt of the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association's Eggleston-I'anson Award for Professionalism, the concept of civility among lawyers being dear to his heart. He was Vice President and Director of Tidewater Professional Sports (an investor in the Norfolk Tides) for over 40 years, and was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Eastern Virginia Medical School and a board member of the United Way Foundation and Cedar Point Country Club. He was proudest of his family. His is survived by his wife Jerry, who helped him through college while becoming Phi Beta Kappa at William and Mary and a high school and college teacher, whom Monty referred to as "his angel." He has two children, Paul Shawn Knight and Kimberly Anne Phillips (David Scott Phillips), and two grandchildren Miles Montgomery and Tyler David Phillips. He is survived by a brother, Edward Knight, and was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Knight. A graveside service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, October 18th at St. Mary's Cemetery in Norfolk with the Rev. Fr. David Knight officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norfolk Sports Club Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 12501, Norfolk, VA 23541. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements.
