He was born in Affinity, W.Va., on February 14, 1920, and was a long-time resident of Tidewater Va. Gene had been married to Dorothy Parsons for over 74 years and had two children, Dorothy Salyers, who has preceded him in death, and James Ray Knighton and his wife, Nancy Knighton. He has two grandchildren, Stephen and Brian Salyers of Hollywood Calif. Gene was a railroad worker at Norfolk Naval base before retirement and was a member of London Bridge Baptist Church of Virginia Beach. Gene served in the Marine Corps during WW2. Gene loved hunting and fishing. For over fifty years, he was a member of the Tidewater Anglers Club. He served two terms as President and over twenty years on its Board of Directors. Gene was on the club's highly touted surf casting team that frequently won the prestigious Ocean City Cup Casting Tournament. Gene was one of few that achieved the club's Master Angler's Award.
