Daniel Knowles died suddenly at the Norfolk Protestant hospital at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of two days. He was in the 77th year of his age. The deceased was well known in this city where he had resided all his life. He was a veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars and served on the Merrimac with the United Artillery, of which he was a first sergeant and later a lieutenant, and was gunner for the nine-inch Dalghren gun during the Merrimac’s engagement with the federal fleet in Hampton Roads and was wounded in the fight of that vessel with the Monitor. The funeral will take place from H. C. Smith's funeral apartments, No. 179 Bank street, at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon. Only on Saturday Mr. Knowles announced his candidacy for keeper of cemeteries.
