Kriss, a 17- year-old South Norfolk boy, became exhausted and was drowned. Robert Smith, a companion, went to his assistance, and narrowly escaped death, being pulled under twice. The two boys swam to a sand bar in the Southern branch, about 100 yards from the shore, against a strong tide. Both boys were doubtful as to their ability to reach shore on the return, and Smith warned his companion not to attempt it. They started, however, and when they had covered about half the distance to the shore Kriss weakened. Smith struggled with him for a minute or two, but he sank almost at once. A man named Parker, living near the scene, went out in a launch and located the body with a boat hook about half an hour later. Young Kriss was the son of Thomas M. Kriss of 8 Park Avenue, South Norfolk. The boy who attempted to save his life is a son of A.M. Smith of South Norfolk. Besides his father, Kriss leaves two brothers, O.C. Kriss of Detroit, Mich. and Arthur Kriss of South Norfolk; and two sisters, Mrs. F.E. Barnes and Miss Florence M. Kriss, both of South Norfolk. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. ************************************************************ The funeral services of Howard T.
