A lifelong resident of Tidewater, he was the widower of Marian Gibson LaGiglia and son of Anthony LaGiglia and Carmalina Montagna LaGiglia. Born in Norfolk, he attended St. Mary's Boys Academy, Blair Junior High and was a graduate of Maury High School and the University of Virginia Law School in 1934. He was elected chairman of his law class and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He had been a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1933 and became a life member. He was a member of U.Va.'s championship boxing team in 1930-31 and the Varsity Club. He was an unofficial life guard at 22nd Street in Virginia Beach before the present life guard system was started and, as a teen-ager, made many unassisted rescues. He later became a Red Cross Water Safety swimming instructor. He coached Virginia Beach community basketball teams for eight years and the Elks Little League baseball team and was a vice president of Virginia Beach Little League. He was a past president of Wards Corner Business and Professional Association, and a past president of Young Italian and American Progressive Club. He was a life member of Norfolk Lodge 38 B.P.O. Elks, Ryan Club of Norfolk and a former member of Norfolk's Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus. He was president of Lilly Inc. of Virginia, and past president and owner of A. LaGiglia and Sons, Trading as Tony Shoe Stores from 1898 to 1979. He was also a member of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Camilla L. Worrell and Polly L. Upton; two sons, Michael A. LaGiglia Jr. and his wife, Marty, and Joseph C. LaGiglia ; a brother, Joseph L. LaGiglia , all of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Lawson Worrell IV, Anne Worrell Ritter, Marian Upton, Caren Upton, Robert Upton III, Kristina Upton Jackson, Paul Upton, Ellyn LaGiglia , Michael LaGiglia III; and seven great- grandchildren. A Christian wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach by Fr. James E. Dorson.
