Lancaster, Navy Architect, Succumbs at 66 Native of England, He Had Resided Here for Many Years Arthur James Lancaster, aged 66, principal naval architect at the Norfolk Navy Yard, died yesterday morning at 9:15 o'clock at his residence, 406 South Main street, Berkley, after an illness of three days that followed a heart attack. Mr. Lancaster was considered an authority on church music, symbolism and law, and was actively identified with St. Bride's Episcopal Church, in Berkley, to the vestry of which he recently was elected after having served for a number of years as a junior warden. He was chairman some years ago of the church's building committee, and was director of the choir at the time of his death. Mr. Lancaster for many years was a lay reader and later a precentor of Christ Church and a member of the vestry. A resident of this section for 46 years, Mr. Lancaster came here in October, 1899, and began his career with the Norfolk Navy Yard. In 1911, he became supervisor and was made the principal architect in 1931. He was a native of Whitford County of Flint England. He was the son of the late Joshua and Mary Stringfellow Lancaster. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena Ottley Lancaster; one daughter, Mrs. Alan McGann; one son, John Black Lancaster, all of Norfolk; a brother, Harold Lancaster, and two sisters, the Misses Jessie and Daisy Lancaster, of England; one step-daughter, Mrs. James Old, of Norfolk; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The body will be taken from the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover avenue at Manteo street, to St. Bride's Episcopal Church for funeral services tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. David C. George, rector of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
