Miss Viola Land, formerly of Norfolk, died in a Philadelphia hospital Monday, 
Dec. 14.  She had resided in Philadelphia for the past 30 years.

A member of an old Norfolk family, Miss Land was the granddaughter of the late 
well known Rev. Marshall Land, property owner and civic leader of his day.

Her maternal grandparents, the E. S. Thompsons, were well-known highly respected 
citizens of Farmville, VA.  She was the niece of the late Attorney W. H. Land 
and Mrs. Marcella Land Paige, of Norfolk and daughter of Lemuel and Mrs. Eva 
Thompson Land, both deceased of Farmville.

Active in social and civic affairs of Philadelphia, Miss Land was president of 
the Marie Billups Circle of Daughters of Norfolk there.

A graduate of Virginia State College, she was active in area choral groups prior 
to leaving the city.

Surviving are two uncles, Russell N. Land of New York and Attorney R. J. L. 
Paige of Norfolk;  brother, Elmer Land of New York;  niece, Geraldine Land Mack;  
and cousins, Vera Land Browne, Lola L. Riddick, Bernice Land, W. H. Land Jr., 
Vernetta Morgan, Joycelyn P. Carter, Nokemis Paige, Gault, Kenswin, Gwendelle 
and Duetrelle Paige.

The body will lie in state at Hale Funeral Home Friday evening and Saturday.  
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. from First United 
Presbyterian Church, with the pastor, the Rev. O. T. Wynne, officiating.
