Mr. Lane and J.H. Duncan, Paulet Lane, Fally Hall, Noah Howell, John Newbern and a Mr. Smith, were sitting in the upper hall talking, when Mr. Lane slumped in his chair, unconscious, and died about three minutes later. He had been in failing health for several years, but was able to be about. Mr. Lane was a native of the South Norfolk community when the spot on which the city stands was covered with fields and farmhouses. His parents were William T. and Mrs. Martha Brinkley Lane. Mrs. Lane died only a year ago at the age of 93. They also lived in the community for many years, and while his immediate family is composed of a son, five daughters, and a brother, more distant kinsmen living in the community number several hundred. The son is Waverly Lane and the daughters are Mrs. Myrtle White, Mrs. Nellie VanVleek, Mrs. Bernetta Abbott, the latter of Union, N.J.; Mrs. Helen Overton and Mrs. Emma T. Fulford. The brother is W.H. Lane, and there are several grandchildren. Mr. Lane was in the retail drug business in South Norfolk for many years. He retired about 15 years ago. He was a member of Oakdale Lodge 70, I.O.O.F., and of Thomas Jefferson Council 16, Order Fraternal Americans. The body was taken to the funeral home of J.R. Williams, 1027 Chesapeake avenue, South Norfolk. Funeral services will be announced later. The home of Mr. Lane was at Chesapeake avenue and Guerrier street, where several of his children lived with him. His wife died several years ago.
