Popularly known as “Bill Langley,” he was born in Mecklenburg County, VA, the son of the late Robert and Mrs. Lucinda Wright Langley, but had lived in Norfolk for 67 years. His funeral was held at St. John’s AME Church Thursday at 1 p.m. with the pastor, the Rev. J. R. Johnson Jr., officiating. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery with the B. F. King Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Langley is survived by his widow, Mrs. Pauline Jordan Langley, and four children by a former marriage. They include George Langley of Norfolk; Mrs. Wilhelmina Shelton, Miss Mable Langley and Vernon Langley of Hempstead, LI, NY. Other survivors include a brother, Emmett Langley of Beloan VA, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Paxton of this city; grandchildren, Orian Langley, George Shelton, Marlen Langley and Arthur Vernon Langley; two-daughters-in-law, Mrs. George Langley and Mrs. Marion Langley, and a son-in-law, George Shelton. “Bill” Langley enlisted in the Navy in 1898. At the expiration of his enlistment he entered the Merchant Marine Service where he remained employed for a number of years. Later he became connected with the U. S. Coast Guard, from which he retired in 1941, just one month prior to the outbreak of World War II. Mr. Langley’s first wife, Mrs. Emma Nixon Langley, died in 1911, leaving motherless five small children. In 1914 he married Miss Pauline Jordan of Eastville VA, who mothered the children to adulthood and is at present his surviving widow residing at the Bolton street address. He had been a member of St. John’s church since 1915, when he joined there under the pastorate of the late Rev. E. H. Hunter. He was also a member of Eureka Lodge, Inc., and the Lancasters Social Club.
