He was predeceased by his brothers, Palmer and Joseph Lawler and sisters, Mary Fenton Lawler and Frances Scullion. Mr. Lawler is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Kurmlavage Lawler, and his four children and their families, Mary Lewis and husband Raymond of Sparta, N.J., Linda Lawler Shahan and her husband Richard Dollar of Norfolk, Edward Fenton Lawler and his wife Margaret Barry Lawler of Southern Shores, N.C., and daughter Susan Kurmlavage Lawler of Norfolk. Mr. Lawler had 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Patrick and Francis Lewis, Eric, Cyrus and his wife Alison, Adam and Alice Shahan, Rachael Cooper and Weston and Barry Lawler. He is also survived by his special "fourth daughter" Carol Fickenscher Russell and her husband Mark from Annandale, Va. Mr. Lawler was born in Norfolk on May 7, 1913 to Cora Marea and Edward Fenton Lawler. He graduated from Maury High School in 1932 and graduated from William and Mary College. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic minister for many years. Mr. Lawler served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as assistant navigator and turret officer aboard the USS Chester (CA-27) and participated in operations in the Pacific Theatre including the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Leyte Gulf, and the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict and served in Pearl Harbor at that time. Mr. Lawler was past president of Cavalier Shipping Company and a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Ryan Club and was past president of the Propeller Club. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. Burial will be at St. Marys Cemetery in Norfolk. A Christian Wake will be held at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments today at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Lawler's name may be made to the Sacred Heart Church Capital Improvement Fund.
