She was predeceased by her husband, Edward F. Lawler; her sister, Mildred Sanford; and brothers, Michael and Peter Kurmlavage. She is survived by her children and their families, Mary Lewis and husband Raymond of Sparta, N.J., Linda Shahan and husband Richard Dollar of Norfolk, Edward Lawler and his wife Margaret Barry Lawler of Southern Shores, N.C., and Susan K. Lawler of Norfolk; and special daughter, Carol Fickenscher Russell and husband Mark of Annandale. Mrs. Lawler had 11 grandchildren, Christopher Lewis and Lauren McGowan, Patrick Lewis, Francis Lewis, Eric Shahan and his wife Ryoko, Cyrus Shahan and his wife Alison, Adam Shahan and Alice Shahan, Rachel Cooper, Weston Lawler and Barry Lawler. Mrs. Lawler was born in Seltzer City, Pa., June 22, 1916, to Michael and Mary Elizabeth Kurmlavage. She graduated from Pottsville High School and went on to become a registered nurse, graduating from Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. When commercial air travel was in its infancy, she became a stewardess for TWA, acquiring more than half a million miles of flight time. She married Lt. Cmdr. Edward F. Lawler in 1945 and moved to Norfolk, where she lived for 55 years. She was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, helping to found the senior citizen visitation group, which continues to this day. Mrs. Lawler was on the auxiliary board of St. Mary's Infant Home. Mrs. Lawler was energetic and embraced people and had a knack for remembering their names. She always maintained a positive attitude toward life. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, at 2 p.m. Thursday by Father Daniel Klem. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. There will be a Christian wake held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments today at 4 p.m. followed by visitation until 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and/or the St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children.
