LAWLER, SR., LEADING CITIZEN, DIES AT RESIDENCE Had Served As City Sergeant and On Council and In Assembly John F. Lawler, Sr., one of Norfolk’s oldest and best-known citizens, died at his residence, 1028 Spottswood avenue, yesterday morning at 4:30 o’clock after a long illness. He was 71 years old. Mr. Lawler, although born in Richmond, had been a resident of Norfolk since he was an infant. He was a son of the late John and Susan Shaw Lawler. For many years Mr. Lawler was prominent in politics and civic affairs. He served as city sergeant for 18 years, was a member of the City Council and represented Norfolk in the Virginia General Assembly. He was an ardent Democrat and supported the party both nationally and locally in all elections. Mr. Lawler was a charitable man and had befriended the needy of Norfolk for many years. When he was city sergeant, it was said of him that he paid the house rent of more poor people than any other man in public office, except perhaps the late James V. Trehy. He was a member of several fraternal orders including Norfolk Council No. 357, Knights of Columbus, Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B. P. O. Elks, and Norfolk Aerie of Eagles. He also was a director of the Twin-City Building & Loan Association. He took an active part in church affairs, being a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its building committee. He is survived by one daughter, Miss Nora T. Lawler, four sons, John F. Lawler, Jr., Lee Lawler, Dr. Emmet J. Lawler and Vincent J. Lawler and 10 grandchildren, all of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Mary Hayes, of Montgomery, Ala.; and three brothers, Robert Lawler, P. H. Lawler and Frank J. Lawler, of Norfolk. The funeral services will be held at the Sacred Heart Church tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock. Burial will be made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
