He was 69. Mr. Lawler was a senior partner in the law firm of Kellam, Pickrell, Lawler and Cox, which he joined 35 years ago when the firm was known as Kellam and Kellam. Mr. Lawler lived in the 1300 block of Bolling Ave with his wife of 39 years, Margaret Long Lawler. A native of Norfolk, Mr. Lawler was a graduate of Maury High School, the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia Law School. Mr. Lawler entered the Navy in 1912 as a general line officer and saw service aboard the cruisers Boise and Helena in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. His military decorations include eight battle stars. In 1945, he went on inactive duty and entered law school. After graduating in 1948, he practiced law for three years in Norfolk. When the Korean War started, Mr. Lawler was ordered to active duty and was an operations and gunnery officer with the Fleet Training Group, Chesapeake Bay. He retired with the rank of commander in 1955. Mr. Lawler was a member of several professional groups, including the Virginia State Bar Association, Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, Virginia Beach Bar Association and American Bar Association He also was a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and Harbor Club and Virginia Club. In addition to his wife, Margaret, other survivors include four daughters, Katherine L. Ingram and Patricia Lawler, both of Norfolk. Fenton Lawler Shugrue of Richmond and Ann Matthews Lawler of Lynchburg, a son, William B. Lawler of Norfolk, a brother, Edward Fenton Lawler of Norfolk, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, by the Rev. John J. Horgan. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
