Sergt., Fifteenth Air Force, previously reported missing after having been shot down over Linz, Austria, on October 16, 1944, now officially is reported as dead, according to a message from the War Department received by his sole surviving sister, Miss Margaret Elward Lawless, of 611 Manteo Street, yesterday. Sergeant Lawless was born here on April 19, 1908, the son of the late Judge Joseph Thomas Lawless and Mrs. Marie Antelotti Lawless. He was educated at Maury High School, Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute. He posthumously was awarded the Army Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. In addition to his sister, Sergeant Lawless is survived by two brothers, Gregory Benedict Lawless, of 1039 Buckingham Avenue, and Sergt. Edward Kirwan Lawless, temporarily stationed at Tampa, Fla., and two nieces and six nephews. Prior to his enlistment in February 1942, Sergeant Lawless was employed here by the Southern Stevedoring Company.
