Mr. Lawless was born in Norfolk, the son of the late Joseph Thomas Lawless Jr. and Dorothy Spencer Hart. Mr. Lawless retired from the United States Navy. He graduated from Maury High School in 1946. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1952 and obtained his master's from Old Dominion University in electrical engineering. Mr. Lawless retired from Old Dominion University as a professor in electrical engineering. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. Mr. Lawless was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Lawless. He was also predeceased by four brothers and a sister. Survivors include three daughters, Katherine Dudley Lawless and her husband, Jamie Lowe of Norfolk, Mary Lawless Gregory and her husband, Christopher of Woodbridge, Va., Dorothy Lawless Edwards and her husband, Mark of Norfolk; two sons, John Hart Lawless Jr. of Roanoke, Va., and Thomas Kirkpatrick Lawless of Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Lawless is also survived by 11 grandchildren. He will be missed by many from the neighborhood who found their way to the Lawless Kitchen Table. A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Monday at 11 a.m. by Father Daniel N. Klem. There will be a Christian wake at the funeral home today at 7 p.m. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hdoliver.com. H.D.
