Mr. Lawless was a native of Norfolk and was the grandson of the late Judge Joseph T. Lawless and Marie Antilotti Lawless, and was the son of the late Joseph T. Lawless Jr. and Dorothy Hart Lawless. He was also predeceased by his brother, Spencer Coleman Lawless. He graduated from Maury High School in 1944 and from Duke University in electrical engineering in 1948. He served two years active duty in the Naval Reserve aboard the USS Escape ARS-6 and the USS Maury AGS-16 and remained in the Naval Reserve until his retirement in 1974 with 30 years of service, having attained the rank of Commander. In 1949, he started his career with the Army Corps of Engineers in the electrical section at Fort Norfolk. He advanced to chief, Dams and Reservoirs, and later chief, Construction and Operations. He retired in 1988 after 39 years of service, and was placed in the Fort Norfolk Gallery of Distinguished Engineers in 1991. He was a member of the board of the James Barry Robinson Home for many years, and had served as its treasurer and president. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Katharine Segar Lawless; two sons, Joseph Thomas Lawless IV and Edward Barron Lawless and his wife, Dia Wood Lawless; three brothers, John H. Lawless and his wife, Elizabeth, the Honorable Lawrence C. Lawless and his wife, Susan, and Michael L. Lawless; his sister, Katharine V. Lawless; his brothers-in-law, Samuel B. Segar Jr. and his wife, Nancy, Edward B. Segar and his wife, Dale; his mother-in-law, Katharine B. Segar; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Fr. Jay Wagner. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
