Spencer C. Lawless, 69, of the 1300 block of Harmott Ave., died May 16, 1999, in a local hospital. Cmdr. Lawless was a native of Norfolk and a Navy veteran of Vietnam. His squadron tours included VAHM-10 and VS-27. Other tours were Operation Deep Freeze, NAS Cecil Field, USS Intrepid, AFSOUTH Naples and Commander Second Fleet Italy. He attended the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School. Survivors include his beloved wife of 40 years, Barbara Lawless of Norfolk; his son, Michael Lawless of Minneapolis, Minn.; his sister, Katherine Lawless of Norfolk; four brothers, Joseph T. Lawless and his wife, Kate, John Hart Lawless and his wife, Betsy, the Honorable Lawrence Lawless and his wife, SuSu, and Michael Lawless, all of Norfolk; his "FGS" and Light of His Life, Michael Hart Lawless of Warrenton, Va.; nine nieces; and six nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father John Dorgan. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.
