She passed away quietly in her Norfolk home on Washington Park surrounded by her family. Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Lt. James Kirkpatrick, Elizabeth Hemingway Kirkpatrick Hinman, and stepfather, Gen. Dale D. Hinman. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John H. Lawless; brother, James Kirkpatrick and wife Olive; children, John H. Lawless Jr. and fiancee Kim Newman, Kathy Lawless and husband Jamie Lowe, Thomas K. Lawless, Mary Gregory and husband Chris, Dorothy Edwards and husband Mark; cousins, William Hemingway and wife Stephanie, Peyton Wilder and husband Gene; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and a great many nieces and nephews. Betsy’s kind and generous nature won her scores of devoted friends who join the family in mourning her passing. Betsy was born in Norfolk in 1929, and attended Maury High School and Whittier High School. She graduated from Whittier College and taught for more than 20 years in the Norfolk city schools, including many years at the Coronado School and the Madison Career Center. She served for more than 20 years as a Girl Scout leader, was a lifetime member of the Irene Leach Society and a member of the Fortnightly Study Club. Her home was filled with the laughter of friends and family and is well remembered as a welcome haven for her children, grandchildren and their many friends. A memorial Mass will be celebrated by Fathers Daniel Klem and John Dorgan at Sacred Heart Church Monday at 10 a.m. with arrangements by the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
