Lawrence died Oct. 15, 2000, in his residence. Mr. Lawrence was a native of Norfolk, and the son of the late Charles O. Lawrence and Laurie Simmons Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles O. Lawrence Jr. He attended Taylor Elementary, Blair Junior and Maury High schools, the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and the University of Virginia and left college to be commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member and former vestryman of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Lawrence was a veteran of World War II. Although he was in the Coast Guard, he was attached to the U.S. Navy and was its youngest skipper during that period. He served in anti-submarine warfare duty from Boston to the Caribbean and South America and later was the commanding officer of the LST787 which was a landing and transport ship. He commanded the lead ship into Iwo Jima, served two years in the Pacific Theater and two years in the Atlantic Theater. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant commander. He entered the life insurance business with the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and worked for 52 years. He was a member of the Norfolk Life Underwriters Association and served on its board, and was a chartered life underwriter and a life member of the Million Roundtable. He was a member of the Norfolk German Club; founder of Norfolk Young Life; and founder of the Prayer Breakfast with Dick Woodward. Survivors include his wife, Meeta Myers Lawrence; two daughters, Meeta L. Jones and her husband, William H. Jones, Laurie L. Reilly and her husband, Craig E. Reilly; and four grandchildren, William Craig Reilly, Katherine Barton Reilly, Noah William Jones and Joshua Hillebrand Jones; his sister-in-law, Hazel Callehan Lawrence; and a nephew, Charles O. Lawrence III. A church service will be conducted at noon Friday at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church by the Rev. James H.W. Sell. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery . Memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Young Life, 7305 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, or the building fund of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Olney and Stockley Gardens, Norfolk, VA 23517. H.D.
