Washington High School athlete died at the Naval Hospital shortly after five o'clock Monday afternoon. Funeral services would likely be held at the Holy Temple Church in the 700 block of Chapel Street, where the youthful victim held membership and where he was formerly assistant superintendent and then superintendent of the Sunday school, and that a Naval Guard of honor would be supplied from the Naval Training station at the rites. Obey was elected captain of the Booker T. Washington High School football squad in the fall of 1935 but never served in this capacity Extremely popular and well liked generally, he was also a member of the track team, being a member of the relay team which represented the local school at the Pennsylvania Relay Carnival in April, 1935. Van Buren Luke, Booker T. Coach, praised him as a splendid athlete and student Tuesday morning. He was always cooperative and had the interest of the team always at heart, Mr. Luke said. Obey did not graduate with the class of 1936 but was a member of the 3-A class when he left school. Mr. Obey is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Obey; four brothers, Messrs. George, William, Andrew and Nathaniel Obey, all of Norfolk; a baby sister, Ruth Elizabeth, 11 months old; a grandmother, two uncles, an aunt, and numerous other relatives and friends.
