Impressive funeral rites were held at First Calvary Baptist Church at 1 p.m., Dec. 11, with Dr. C. E. Griffin, pastor, officiating. The family paper was read by Mrs. Fostine E. Riddick. The nurses had a brief program at the grave. The pallbearers were C. D. Henry, James Hunter, S. H. Bell, Johnnie Maltby, Winston Douglas, M. J. Green and Henry Riddick. Hale Funeral Home had charge of arrangements for the funeral. The survivors are Mr. and Mrs. Hillary Wright, and other relatives. Mrs. Lee was born in Wilmington, NC and attended Shaw University at Raleigh. She married Fredrick Douglas Kelly and was happily married for eight years. One child, Mabel Louise, was born to this family. After the death of the father, Mrs. Lee entered Dixie Hospital, Hampton, and graduated in September 1904 as poet of her class. She settled in Newport News and practiced as a private nurse and visiting nurse for an insurance company. Mrs. Lee was one of the founders of Whittaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News. In 1910 she was called to Kimball, W.VA. to be in charge of Roscoe Memorial Hospital. After serving there a number of years, she was asked to go to Bluefield, WVA in 1914 to take charge of Dr. N. L. Edward’s hospital. The Rev. T. D. Lee, pastor of First Baptist Church, Lawrence KS, and Mrs. Lee were married in 1922, and the couple moved to Norfolk. Soon afterwards, Mrs. Lee helped to organize the first Community Maternity Hospital, and she served as superintendent for a number of years. Mrs. Lee was one of the founders of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. She was also a member of local, state and national associations of Colored Women’s Clubs. She was an officer of the Mother’s Club, that equipped the Community Center with medical supplies and instruments for a public clinic to the amount of $1,000. She was an alumnus of Dixie Hospital Training School, and was president of the group for 15 years.
