Leslie, Musical Director of the First Baptist Church, died very suddenly yesterday afternoon about 2 o’clock, at his residence on Queen Street, of acute congestion of the lungs, a disease which he had been suffering for a week or ten days. He filled his place as usual at the morning services, but was compelled to leave before the service was over. Mr. Leslie was a native of Canada, but prior to his coming to Norfolk (about eight months ago) had adopted Cleveland, Ohio, as his home. He was a courteous gentleman, and since his residence here had made many friends. His funeral will take place at 4:30 o’clock this afternoon from the First Baptist Church, and his remains interred in Elmwood Cemetery. ****************** Norfolk Landmark Mon., July 17, 1888 Funeral of Professor Leslie The funeral of this lamented gentleman, whose sudden and untimely death took place Sunday last, as has been announced, took place at 4:30 p.m. yesterday, from the First (Cumberland Street) Baptist Church, and was attended by a very large number of the members of the congregation, and the friends and acquaintances of the deceased. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. T.G. Jones, D.D., and were of a more than usually impressive character, some of the music rendered being of the composition of the deceased. After the services at the church the casket, completely covered with beautiful floral offerings, some of them exceedingly choice in design, was conveyed to the hearse and was followed to its last resting place in Elmwood Cemetery by a large concourse. The following gentlemen were the pall-bearers; Messrs. J.T. Williamson, Robert Stephen, C. J. Creekmur, Andrew Dusch, A.B. Rawlett, W.T. Owens. *************************** The Norfolk Landmark, Tues., July 17, 1888 Prof. J.H. During his brief stay here he had won many friends and his death will be greatly regretted.
