A native of Annapolis, Md., he was the husband of the late Margaret Morgan Lewis. He retired in 1961 after 38 years. He initiated the department's Christmas Toy Shop, or Toys for Tots, working with the co-sponsors, the late Trafton Robertson and local Marine Corps Reserve units. He was a former president of Virginia State Fire Chiefs Association, a charter member of Berkley Masonic Lodge 167 and a member of Christian Temple, Grice Commandery 16, Knights Templar, Bayside Masonic Lodge 218, Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter and Khedive Temple of the Shrine. He was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret L. Jordan of Virginia Beach and Barbara L. Trafton of Miami; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Magnolia Cemetery by the Rev. Donald L. Kirkbride. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, has charge of arrangements. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children. Bayside Lodge will give Masonic rites at the graveside.
