She was born and raised in Norfolk and made her home in Virginia Beach until moving to her daughter's house in Chesapeake about nine years ago, ultimately moving to Roanoke about two and a half years ago. She had a full and meaningful life with a strong commitment to her faith and family. She grew up in Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk and, as an adult, was a lifelong member of Star of the Sea Church in Virginia Beach. She graduated from Maury High School and attended William and Mary's Norfolk Campus (now Old Dominion University). After marrying and having four children, she served her country as a civil servant for the U.S. Navy for 20 years, working in the Atlantic Fleet accounting office at the Naval Operations Base in Norfolk, receiving many awards for perfect attendance, hard work and innovative, money- saving ideas which the Navy department implemented service-wide. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. All will remember her for her good manners, her sense of decorum, her great sense of humor, her unwavering faith, and her loving, supportive and encouraging nature. She was known to her family as the "dessert queen," and she loved to travel, garden, shop and play bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Heber Byard Lilley and by her parents, Margaret Ethel Prince Rumfelt and Elmer Austin Rumfelt, as well as her brother, Jack. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by her sons, Gregory B. Lilley and his wife, Marsha Peterson, of Fork Union, Va., and Vincent A.
