Long, former commissioner of the revenue of Norfolk and also a former postmaster of Norfolk, died at 10 o’clock yesterday morning at the family residence, 725 Boissevain avenue, in the 64th year of his age. He had been in failing health for a year and was confined to his bed two weeks. Mr. Long was a native of County Limerick, Ireland, and had lived in Norfolk 49 years. He was widely known in the city and state, having been prominent for a long time in political and fraternal society circles and was esteemed by all who knew him. Mr. Long was commissioner of the revenue of Norfolk just preceding the incumbency of the late W. W. Dey in that office and was appointed postmaster by President Arthur. He was at various times president and treasurer of the Twin City Building Association here, and he had been president of three local fraternal societies, Catholic Knights of America, Emeralds and Hibernians. He was also a member of the Elks. He had been a resident of Petersburg for two years, when chief deputy under Colonel J. D. Brady, collector of internal revenue. Mr. Long is survived by four daughters, Misses Anna, Katherine, May and Helen Long, and two sons, Maurice J. and Raymond Long, all of Norfolk. The funeral will be held at 4 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at Sacred Heart Catholic church, of which he was a member. Rev. A. J. Halbleib officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
