Allen Lovette, son of Mrs. Elnora Ruffin Lovette and the late Dr. W. T. Lovette, died Sunday, August 22, about 11 p.m. in a Norfolk hospital. He was taken to the hospital Sunday shortly after 10 o’clock. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 25, at 2:30 at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Venerable Richard B. Martin, rector, in charge. The deceased had been in ailing health for about a week. He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center where he was the Ships Supply Depot equipment specialist. Mr. Lovette, who was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, attended Hampton Institute. He was a talented banjo player, and a member of the choir of Grace Episcopal Church where he sang bass. His musical ability and services won for him the title “Doc” among his friends. Though largely self-taught, Mr. Lovette played the mandolin and electric guitar as well as the banjo. He took piano lessons, but picked up the string instruments himself. Singing classic oratorios and the anthems of Handel, Bach, and Beethoven kept the musician reading up on music, and strengthened his ability to interpret music. Mr. Lovette was a member of Eureka Lodge. He was also an active fraternal man being a member of the Masons. In addition to his mother, Mr. Lovette is survived by one aunt, Mrs. Lizzie Ruffin Puryear, Norfolk; several cousins, including Samuel C. Merritt Sr., Norfolk, and William Henry Merritt, New York City, and other relatives. Burial was in West Point Cemetery with Hale’s Funeral Home in charge.
