He was accompanied by his daughter, Miss Susie Lowery. The immediate cause of his demise was heart failure. The deceased was an attaché of the Norfolk Custom House, and had been for many years. He was a very prominent Republican and was for a long period the official leader of that party in Norfolk. He was a Confederate veteran, having been one of the youngest soldiers in the War Between the States, serving in Mahone’s Brigade as a drummer boy at 16 years of age. He was highly esteemed in Norfolk and throughout Tidewater Virginia, having many warm friends, to whom his death will come as a personal loss. He was in the 63rd year of his age and is survived by the following children: John E. Lowery, Thomas Lowery, Jr., Riddick McI., Lowery, Miss Susie Lowery and Miss Lottie G. Lowery. John E. Lowery, his son, left last night for Mecklenburg to accompany the remains here. They arrive this evening. Ledger-Dispatch, Thurs., June 11, 1908, pg. 7 The funeral of Thomas Lowery takes place at 4 o’clock this afternoon from the residence 451 Olney Road. Services will be conducted by Rev. Vernon I’Anson, pastor of the Grace Baptist Church. The interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The following will act as pall- bearers: W.M. Mason, A. Aronheim, Major Clinton L. Wright, Major Marshall Tarrell, E.P. Ball, R.S. Holland and J.M. Marshall.
