LYONS DIED LAST NIGHT Pioneer Citizen of Berkley Passes Away After Long and Useful Life William H. Lyons, father of County Treasurer, S.W. Lyons, died last night at 11 o'clock at his home on the waterfront, near Pearl street, in the 81st year of his age, after an illness of several years' duration. The deceased was a native of Pennsylvania and came to Portsmouth in 1853, where he was honored with many of the highest offices in the gift of the people during his residence in that city for nineteen years. He was president of the Portsmouth city council, treasurer of Portsmouth city and after his retirement from public office was superintendent of machinery at the Norfolk navy yard during the remainder of his active life. He was a Knight Templar of Portsmouth Commandery No. 5; Berkley Blue Lodge, No. 167, A.F. & A.M. and past master and high priest in the Portsmouth Royal Arch Chapter and Trustee of Berkley Lodge, No. 485, Royal Arcanum. He made his home in Berkley in 1872, became identified with the various interests of the town and was one of the factors in its growth and development. He was a member of Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is survived by three children, S.W. Lyons, Mrs. Charles H. Williams, 122 Main street, Berkley and Miss Sophie Belle Lyons. The funeral will be conducted from the above residence Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock and the interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
