NORFOLK – Funeral services will be conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 
Saturday at 9 a.m. for Mrs. Anne Lester Lyons, 91, widow of Michael Joseph Lyons 
and member of a widely known Norfolk family. Interment will be in St. Mary’s 
Cemetery.
Rosary services for Mrs. Lyons, who died Wednesday at the residence, 117 W. 16th 
St., will be conducted at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments tonight at 8 
o’clock.
A native of Norfolk, Mrs. Lyons was a daughter of the late John and Mrs. Rose 
Reilly Lester. She was born a few years after the close of the War Between the 
States and was an interested participant and spectator of the growth of Norfolk 
into the modern city that it is today.
Mrs. Lyons shared her husband’s keen interest in politics. He served as a member 
of the State House of Delegates in 1899-1900 and in the special session of 1901. 
He was also actively identified with the Norfolk Central Labor Union.
During the administration of the late James V. Trehy, clerk of the Corporation 
Court, Mrs. Lyons accepted a position as clerk. A specialist in verification of 
deeds, Mrs. Lyons was repeatedly commended by attorneys of the city for her 
efficiency. Her services at the clerk’s office extended into the clerkship of 
William L. Prieur Jr., present clerk of the court. It was about 20 years ago 
that she completed her services with the court.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mrs. Lyons is survived by a niece, Miss Katie Sullivan, and two nephews, Charles 
A. Sullivan and John Lester Sullivan, all of Portsmouth.
