He was 63 years old and had been ill about three weeks when he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. Mr. Madden was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and had been in business here for 36 years. He was the proprietor of two shoe stores and at various times during his business career was identified with other enterprises in this city. For many years he was identified with political and civic matters in the city and always took an interest in anything that had as its object the upbuilding of Norfolk and its immediate vicinity. He was a son of the late Patrick and Hannah Madden. He was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B. P. O. Elks, and Norfolk Council No. 367, Knights of Columbus, and of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jennie B. Madden, one son, Joseph G. Madden, and three daughters, Miss Kathleen Madden, Mrs. A. C. Johnson and Mrs. Derwood L. Steger, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in St. Mary’s Church Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock and will be conducted by the Rev. Father E. A. Brosnan, pastor. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
