Mrs. Madrey was born in Marion, S.C., to the late Minnie P. and Nathaniel Gregg Sr. She was a retired sales person of Rices-Nachmans for more than 44 years. She was one of the founders of Bethany Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and served as the following: Deaconess, church clerk, Senior Choir member, Missionary Circle, pastor's aide, financial secretary, and president of the Baptist Training Union. She served as vice president of the United Order of Tents Southern District No. 1 for 20 years, leader of Adaline Jewels Tent No. 379, chairperson of the Berkley Advisory Board-Multipurpose Center, and member of the first Police Advisory Board. Mrs. Madrey graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and furthered her studies with two years of nursing education. She is survived by her loving and devoted son, Elverett E. Gregg and wife, Joyce L. Gregg, of Virginia Beach; a devoted daughter, Kathryn Madrey White of Norfolk; a devoted sister, Emma Gregg Harris of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Tracey Gregg Lemon and husband, Ra Sheed L. Lemon, of Yorktown, Va., Trishawn L. Gregg of Virginia Beach, Elverett E. ``Stacy'' Gregg II of Virginia Beach; three great-grandchildren, Ra Sheed L. Lemon II, Timothy L.J. Lemon of Yorktown and Chantel A. Trusty of Virginia Beach; nephews, William Gregg Harris of West Hempstead, N.Y., John Gregg and wife, Marie, of East Orange, N.J., Nathaniel Gregg, Lee Gregg and James Gregg of Washington, D.C.; great-nephew, Dwayne Harris of Charlotte, N.C.; cousin, Agnes Haynes of Norfolk; and a host of friends. Minnie was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who lived for her church, children, sister, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Minnie had worked tirelessly for the citizens and community of Berkley. When HUD initiated redevelopment efforts in the 1960s she was appointed chair of the Berkley Model City Advisory Board, where she was instrumental in coordinating plans for the redevelopment of the community. Through the years, she had been an advocate for the citizens of Berkley and had lobbied the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the city for funds for projects to enhance their quality of life. Mrs. Madrey had a particular love for the children of Berkley as evident by her dedication to the improvement of the Berkley Multi-Service Center and its facilities. It was mandated by Mayor Paul D. Fraim that the present computer room be named the Minnie G. Madrey Resource Center in recognition of her devotion to the Berkley community and its residents and children. The wake will be held at 6 p.m. today at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street, Norfolk, and the funeral will be held at noon Monday at Bethany Baptist Church, Campostella Road, Chesapeake, by Dr. Jake Manley Sr. The family has requested that any donations be made to the Tidewater Area Musicians (TAM), c/o Mrs. Glenda Moore, 405 Maiden Lane, Chesapeake, VA 23325, made payable to Tidewater Area Musicians. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. The family and friends will assemble at 420 Middlesex St. at 11 a.m. for the procession to the church.
