Maher, special representative of the State Port Authority at Norfolk and for many years a well-known figure in shipping circles, died at a Norfolk hospital Sunday at 11 p.m. He had been suffering from a heart condition for some time, but did not become seriously ill until last Thursday. He was at his office Wednesday. A native of Elizabeth City County, he had lived in Norfolk for many years. His home was at 620 Redgate Avenue. He was connected with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the early days of his business career and later was engaged in the coal business, first with the Southgate Coal Company and then in business for himself. During World War I, he became affiliated with the United States Fuel Administration. In 1931, he went with the State Port Authority and at one time, was acting director. Because his work with the Port Authority brought him in close touch with the shipping interests in this area, he was regarded as an outstanding authority on matters pertaining to Hampton Roads. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Olive K. Maher, of Norfolk; two sisters, Miss Charlotte and Harriet Maher, one brother, T. Bassett Maher, all of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church today at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Rosary services were held at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Chapel last night.
