Malbon Sr., 94, a retired Esso service station owner, of the 900 block of Kenton Ave., departed this life Nov. 5, 1999, at his home with his family at his bedside. A native of Princess Anne County, he was one of six children born to the late John and Patience Malbon. He served in the Navy and was honorably discharged as a machinist mate, 1st class, and worked as a longshoreman. He later became highly regarded as a savvy businessman. At an early age, he joined First Baptist Church, Lynnhaven, and after his marriage to Leona Malbon, who preceded him in death and to whom he was married for more than 55 years, he moved to Norfolk where he joined Shiloh Baptist Church. He later joined First Baptist Church, Bute Street, where he served as chairman of the Trustee Board and then as deacon for many years. Because of his style and grace, he was renowned and admired by many. He was bestowed the honor of Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret 32nd Degree by the United Supreme Council 33rd Degree on Oct. 25, 1960. Survivors include his son, Johnnie Jr.; daughter-in-law, Joyce; granddaughter, Joyvan, all of the home; nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, many wonderful friends, caregivers and his doctor C. Stokes Kirkland. Johnnie truly loved his family, his church and his community. He loved people and he showed that love to whomever he met. He was a very proud father and grandfather. The homegoing celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Bute Street, with Dr. Robert G. Murray officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk.
