He had been in ill-health for several months. A native of Portsmouth, Mr. Manning had lived in Norfolk practically all his life and had been connected with the paper concern for about 47 years. His wife, Mrs. Fannie Nash Manning, accompanied him to Philadelphia where they arrived Thursday morning and was with him at the time of his death. Because of his weakened condition due to ill-health which had beset him for several months and augmented by complications which followed the lodging of the candy in the lung, attending physicians postponed the operation Thursday. He died about 10 o'clock Thursday night. Starting his career with the paper company as an office boy in 1885, Mr. Manning gradually rose to the office of president to which he was appointed in 1910 and retained until his death. He was a member of the B.P.O.E., the Woodmen of the World and the Travelers Protective Association. Besides his wife, the survivors include a brother, William Manning, of Roanoke, and one sister, Mrs. John Gibbs, of Norfolk. Mr. Manning made his residence at 629 West Twenty-sixth street. The body will arrive this morning in Norfolk and will be taken to the funeral apartments of Flynn & O'Connor, Portsmouth. Funeral arrangements are pending. ******************************************************************* MANNING - At Philadelphia, Pa., Thursday, January 7th, 1932, at 10 p.m., CLEVELAND MANNING.
