The Norfolk Virginian, December 15, 1895 The Virginian yesterday announced the death at Sanford, Md., of Captain John H. Marshall, formerly a resident of Norfolk. Captain Marshall was born in Wilmington, N.C., in 1845. When quite a young man he prepared himself for a pilot, in which profession he was well-known and proficient. He came to Norfolk from Charleston, S.C., in 1887, leaving the latter place on account of the earthquake. He left Norfolk about a month ago for Maine he was taken very ill, of heart failure and died after a short illness. Captain Marshall was a Confederate soldier and up to the time of his death was a member of Pickett-Buchanan Camp of this city. This is the second loss by death his family has been called on to bear, his youngest son having died in September last. He leaves a sister, a wife and six children to mourn his death.
