Martin Jr., 64, Attorney, Political Figure George Gresham Martin Jr., 64, of 902 Hague Towers, a well-known Norfolk attorney and political figure, died in a hospital Friday at 2:45 a.m. He was the husband of Mrs. Harriet Newberry Martin and a son of George Gresham Martin Sr. and Mrs. Lillian Wilson Martin. Born in the Berkley section of Norfolk in 1902, Martin was descended from a family that had been prominent in Norfolk County politics since the late 18th century. He was a descendant of James Greene Martin, a former presiding judge of Norfolk County, and a nephew of Alvah H. Martin, clerk of Norfolk County Court and national Republican committeeman from Virginia for many years. A graduate of Maury High School, Martin attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., the University of North Carolina, and the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1926. He practiced law here about 40 years and was a member of the law firm of Martin, Tilley & Martin at the time of his death. Martin entered the Norfolk area political scene in the 1940's when he was field secretary in the successful campaign of Norman R. Hamilton, publisher of The Portsmouth Star, for Congress from this district. In Norfolk politics Martin was associated with the anti-Byrd faction of the Democratic party. He was 2nd District campaign manager for Martin Hutchinson in the Richmond attorney's unsuccessful bid against Byrd for nomination as U.S. senator. In 1948 Martin managed the district campaign for James P. Hart of Roanoke, who was running for U.S. senator in the primary of that year against A. Willis Robertson. Martin supported Francis Pickens Miller against Gov. John S. Battle in the gubernatorial primary of 1949. Later, however, Martin supported Byrd in the senatorial primary fight with Miller. Martin was a member of Epworth Methodist Church, a director of Chesapeake Building & Loan Association, and a member of the State Bar Association and the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association. He was also a member of Khedive Temple, Doric Masonic Lodge 44, Scottish Rite Bodies, and Travelers Protective Association. During World ar II he was chief counsel for rent control. Surviving, besides his wife, is a daughter, Mrs. Irving F. Truitt Jr. of Norfolk and three grandchildren. The body will be taken from H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Magnolia Cemetery for a funeral service today at 2 p.m. by Dr. Owen T. Kelly. The family requests that flowers be omitted. They will be at 1034 Spotswood Ave., Norfolk.
